At 12.48pm on 6th July 2005, the International Olympic Committee announced that London was the successful city winning the rights to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. At the opening ceremony on the 27th July 2012, London will welcome over 23,000 competitors and officials for 16 days in the largest event in the world.

The award of the games provides the opportunity to embrace the Olympic philosophy and celebrate sport, culture and education, and provide a lasting legacy for the whole of the UK.

East Cambridgeshire has a good reputation for sports delivery, and community and cultural engagement. The plan builds upon our fine performance record and has been developed in such a way as to allow for expansion of the actions dependent on the level of support and commitment by partners and key stakeholders

We have a real opportunity in East Cambridgeshire to use the Olympic Games as a mechanism to achieve real benefits, whether it be through increase participation in sport and culture, reduced obesity, a thriving tourist economy or increased civic pride. This plan aims to achieve these benefits and provide a long term, sustainable legacy for the district.
